What is respite care?
Respite care involves you taking a break from your caring role, while the person you care for is looked after by someone else.
If you have care responsibilities it can be tiring, stressful and have a negative impact on your own health. Respite care allows you to take much needed time off from caring to do something relaxing or enjoyable. It can help stop you becoming exhausted and run down. As a result it can improve family carers mental health and general wellbeing. Taking a break can enable you to return to your caring role refreshed and better able to manage.
A respite break can be regular or just as and when needed and can be for a few hours or for as long as a few weeks.
Respite can involve the person you care for going to stay in a care home for a short period of time or having a live in carer or daily carer cover you at home.
How can Purely Care help?
We offer a range of services to allow you to have a break. Our solutions range from a couple of hours off to let you go shopping to full 24/7 care at home. Our services can be provided on a regular basis such as one afternoon a week, or can be for a short period, for example to let you have a holiday.
-
Sitting services
A care worker will sit with the person you care for during the day, so you can have a few hours off from your caring role. The care worker can help with personal care such as incontinence needs if required as well as companionship. You can choose what to do in your carers break time. Many family carers like to go out, but if you prefer to catch up on your sleep or spend time in the garden that’s fine by us.
-
Taking the person you care for out
The care worker can take the person you care for out, which allows you to have a break at home. We’ll take your advice on where to go. Garden centre, cafe, trip to the sea, theatre, shopping or just a wheelchair ride around the block if that’s what you prefer.
-
Night time respite care
One of our care workers can sit with the person you care for through the night, allowing you the chance to get some sleep. The carer will stay awake all night and will only call you if there is an emergency.
-
Short term daily care
If you help your loved one with personal care, there may be times when it would be beneficial for our domiciliary care service to step in and support you. This might be needed for a few days to a few weeks. A carer will visit for short periods of time each day to check on your loved one and provide specific help such as washing and dressing and meals. We can provide cover for holidays or where the family carer is recuperating from hospital treatment.
-
Short term live in respite care
A live-in care worker provides round the clock care. This could enable you to go away for a holiday, or cover your caring role if you have to go into hospital. More information on how our live in care service operates can be found here.
